Mary Cassatt. 1844-1926. Paris. I) Le Modèle Ancien. CONCLUSION ? THE ART AND THE CONCEPT OF THE ARTIST. DEVELOPMENTS. The centenary of the death of Egon Schiele (1890-1918) can be an opportunity to reflect on the evolution of the artist's conception and role in European painting, because this painter is, with some others, like Chaim Soutine (1893-1943), an important step on the path of this evolution. The history of European painting shows that the notion of the artist, the conception of his role in society and the understanding of his creative activity has evolved considerably over the centuries. This evolution is, in general, parallel to the three great periods which illustrate the history of European painting: The Ancient Arts Modern Art Contemporary art. The result is three models of artists: the ancient model, the modern model, the contemporary model. I) The ancient model From the beginning of European painting, in the Romanesque period and the first Gothic, the artist is an artisan who is at the service of his sponsors and the public. His talent matters a lot, but his individual personality not at all. He is invited to create an art that conforms to the values accepted by the society of his time, as a whole. The artist can be a genius full of talent, but surely not an original, a rebel, a marginal, and his psychological problems, his personal emotions, his particular opinions, must remain outside the workshop, or express himself only in a way Very filtered, molded in the values of his time. The artist must express the aesthetics and ethics of the society in which he lives, his role is not to give shape to his personal visions of the world. This situation will last until the 19th century and Modern Art. The evolution emerging during the Renaissance period certainly favors the individualisation of the artist who imposes his signature on the work, but does not change anything essential in the conception of his social role: artist is at the service of his patrons and the public, and must paint according to their requests and ideas of the time. Discrepancies are not tolerated, and the few artists who tried to make their personality or their ideas prevail over the aesthetic services that society expected of their talents were rejected, or had to return to the rank (Caravaggio). The Reformation has changed nothing in this vision of the artist in the service of a community whose common values he expresses, with more or less genius. Art is made for the public, not for the artist. There is no question for an artist to express himself. He must express, magnificently, the public feeling, oriented by the elites. Art is an exchange between the elites and the public, through artists, who are the means of this communication, of this sharing of an ideology commonly felt. With the Reformation, the common ideology is changing in relation to the Catholic and Orthodox vision of the world. A modification that has certain effects on the themes of art. But absolutely no effect on the artistic techniques, and not on the conceptions that society has of the artist. And not on the conceptions that the artist has of his role. These conceptions of the artist remain the same as before. The Renaissance has only bequeathed to posterity an individualism a little more marked, but without consequences on the conception that society has of the role of art and the artist. This ancient art is not a totalitarian art. There is no art in totalitarian countries. During more than 1500 years the European artist has remained free to express the public sentiment, ideologically correct of course, in a personal way. Rembrandt is an illustration, among many others, of these possibilities that are left to artists to sink into the mold without losing their identity. Rembrandt's art has many marginal aspects in relation to the society of his time, but it bears witness to a not only artistic but contemporary social success that is a testimony to the freedom that is left to the artist. The European art of the past is the observation that an infinity of artists have been able to create a shared art within a society with religiously univocal tendencies, but accepted and shared by the greatest number. There is no art without liberties, or without deep, sincere, relatively free participation of the people in a common ideology. This has been demonstrated in Europe and outside Europe by two recent historical experiences: the communist regimes and the Nazi regime. Both atheist and totalitarian, they proved unable to create memorable art. On the other hand, during more a 1500 years, the art of Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant European societies is a testimony which should be better taken into consideration, in all objectivity, as a model of society. No, it was not an average age, art shows it. II) The modern model In the 19th century, at the time of modern Art, a new conception of the artist emerged, a new typology: The rebellious artist, dissident, autistic, asocial, careless or even contemptuous of the general public. The myth of "The Cursed Artist" is set up. Egon Schiele and Chaïm Soutine are undoubtedly talented artists. Both also have this quality that has made the great creators, sincerity, authenticity. It will be necessary to return to this quality indispensable to the true art, the shared art, the only art, in reality. These two artists represent a particular type of artist, "Modern ", which is no more legitimate than the old one. Contrary to what is often suggested in the mainstream works as the documentary of Arte on Egon Schiele (Youtube) which is an apologetics without much concern for historical objectivity. An entertainment that revisits the past in the light of some fashionable beliefs in the 21st century. There is no exact historiography without respect for the spirit of the time that is evoked. Arte does not tell the past of men in a true way, when he applies the ideas of the present, without worrying about the mentalities of the past. A historical narrative should have explained how the art of Schiele was exemplary on the road from Van Eycke tou Andy Warhol, passing by Van Goyen, Raphael, da Vinci, Caravaggio, Turner, Manet, Courbet, Van Gogh etc. ... Because there are similar routes and many steps on this route. The entire period of Modern Art, since the second half of the 19th century,is a gradual process in which this new vision of the artist is put in place. In particular with the painters of the Secession of Munich then that of Vienna. Egon Schiele did not invent the artist on the margins of society, the accursed artist, but his work and his personality make him an exemplary embodiment of the type. The real originality of Schiele, his remarkable historical interest, is that he is, with great talent, the archetype of the new artist. Egons Schiele is in fact in rupture displayed, proclaimed in a manifest way, with the conception of the art and the artist of the European past, still very majority of his time. A "New Artist", but no better, no smarter nor more open morally, no more intellectually progressive, no more artistically talented, simply other. A conception of the artist that does not disqualify in any case the previous model, that is not outdated. It is obvious that the art of Egon Schiele could not easily be accepted by the society of his time. Except by a minority, who was no more enlightened than his contemporaries, but whose sensibility and motives, various, were only different. The society of the time of Egon Schiele had its equilibrium and its conceptions of the art, its ethical and aesthetic convictions, perfectly effective socially, intellectually and spiritually. It is not historically objective to reproach this society for defending its conceptions against Schiele the rebel. It is absolutely normal, totally democratic, and not retrograde and reactionary, that the society of its time has, to a certain extent, rejected Schiele. This was the point of view of public opinion. And even if public opinion was defined by the aristocracy and the Austrian bourgeoisie, the peasant people were obviously of the same opinion as the bourgeoisie. To attribute this general opinion and censorship to the Church or to a retrograde reactionary mind is propaganda, not a historical look. Public opinion was the same among the Orthodox and Protestants of the time. Egon Schiele in Geneva? Egon Schiele in Constantinople? On the contrary, it must be emphasized that the period of Modern Art is a great era of artistic freedom and aesthetic diversity, as never before in Europe, and perhaps in no other civilization. Egon Schiele would not have been able to express himself artistically as he was able to do, not only in previous centuries in Europe, but certainly not in Muslim societies - even in our time - or Chinese. This hostile public opinion was perfectly legitimate, it was not in error, in obscurantism, passeism, reaction, as we try to make us believe with obstinacy these days. Vienna was even a particularly open and tolerant city. In March 1918, during the Viennese Secession exhibition, Schiele met with great success: an important part of his works was sold, and he obtained orders from important personalities. This was possible because the Europe of the time was ideologically plural, and there were many different conceptions of society and life. Egon Schiele died far too young to take advantage of European freedoms and tolerances. Unfortunately, he did not live as long as Chaim Soutine, he did not have time to discipline his demons, to force them to better serve his art in particular, and art in general. The artist-artisan of civilizations of the past, not only European, was an interpreter of society, of the community to which he belonged, and of his values. The artist had to put aside his personal fantasies and anxieties, a whole individualistic, egocentric, self-centeredness, that did not present any interest to society. He had to be the interpreter of the identity of the whole society. Very rare were the artists of the Beaux Arts Anciens who posed as rebels in relation to the philosophical and aesthetic convictions of their patrons and their public, be it aristocrat, bourgeois, men of church, or popular as in the Netherlands during 17th century. This conception of the artist, master of his person as of his art, serving the public and his beliefs, has not been an obstacle to the development of European art. This art is not a failure, quite the contrary. The whole history of European art demonstrates it. Art is not only made for the artist to express himself. Art is not only for the artist, it is done first for the public. The modern notion of artist, the rebellious artist, is very egocentric, and undemocratic in reality. It is opposed to the opposite, equally well-founded, that wants the artist to express the feelings of a community. The artist can certainly occasionally, on an individual basis, exorcise his demons, represent the aspirations of a minority whose specific values he will express. But we must not reject the idea that the artist must also know how to be the intelligent and sensitive interpreter of society as a whole, or at least of a large community among them. Art is a sharing, as wide as possible, between the artist and his time. With Egon Schiele and his ilk we see the art of deviant minorities. Proof of the liberties of Europe of those times. It is necessary to return to the sincerity which is an interesting reflection trail in aesthetics. It is one of the criteria that makes the difference with the third kind of artist, invented at the time of official contemporary art. Sincerity, authenticity is not a sufficient condition of art, but is absolutely necessary. At certain moments in the history of European painting, certain absences of sincerity, harmful to art, can easily be seen. When the artist does not believe in what he paints, when the theme of the painting commissioned is himself indifferent to him, his reticence is very quickly perceptible. If the emotion of the painter is absent in him, it is necessarily absent in his work, and no thread no longer connects the artist to the public. Egon Schiele was undeniably a sincere artist. A single look at his work is enough to understand him. But what Egon Schiele also demonstrates is that sincerity, even with talent, is not enough to found a global aesthetic, valid for a whole society. Other determinants are needed, including being an interpreter of the values and sensibilities of the peoples in which the artist lives, not just of his individual emotions. We can recognize the talent of Egon Schiele, but without being puritan, and even not at all, it is perfectly legitimate to be tired by his intimate obsessions. As he himself says some of his works are unbearable. And as Arte makes him say to his sister: the drawings he made of her were not intended to be published. They were exorcisms, destined to remain in the private domain. III) The contemporary model The third type of artist appears with the official contemporary art: He cultivates the rebellion, the myth of the protest artist, of the nonconformist. He declares himself on the fringes, and free. Like the modern artist? Yes. But it's a composition role, totally learned. This contemporary artist does not have irrepressible soul states, he is not in an uncontrollable impulse situation. He is not an artist in the sincere way of Egon Schiele. No, the rebellion in the official contemporary art, is a technique necessary and well mastered. A technique necessary for a career at the service of an influential coterie. This artist is on the sidelines of the general public, that's for sure, but he is not on the fringe of the great Influents who decide what contemporary art should be. This revolutionary is under the orders of the rulers, this rebel is in no way rebellious, he is totally in conformity with a model imposed by the Mighty ones. A technique mastered because the official contemporary artist is a cold professional of revolution and provocation, whose means are carefully considered and precisely counted, whose objectives are directly oriented to the museum walls, the international market, and the account in bank. It does not require artistic talents, but a lot of political talents and especially the talent of the discourse on art and to the make it known. Unlike Egon Schiele or Chaïm Soutine, and artists of the first type, the official contemporary artist is totally fallacious. Authenticity is the worst enemy of the official contemporary artist, because his main art is the conforming success. He may have immense artistic gifts and great sensitivity, as an individual. But in a professional capacity he must forget them, to comply with the imposed model: The ugly, the absurd and the maximum provocation. It is the Opportunist Artist, vehicle of the ideology of a small group of Influential, who pose in "enlightened" who claim to dominate very high the aesthetics of the average and popular masses. Art is no longer art, it is non-art, but it is undoubtedly social success, the path of honors and money. These artists, intelligent, perfectly adapted and very efficient, are the only ones capable of creating the Non-Art Contemporain. But not the emotion shared between the artist and the public. The essence of Art. And even simply the Art. They are non-artists. Sad. Obligate, Officially and Richly Sad, like all contemporary art museums in the West. CONCLUSION ? These three types of artists succeed one another, but they do not replace one another, they continue to exist in parallel, in our western society today. 1 ° The official Non-Art Contemporain, and the Globalist Financial Art are the domain almost entirely reserved for the artists of the third type: The Opportunists who chose the camp of the Globalist Art, ideologically correct, ie of a product manufactured to be consumed universally, above, beyond, but alas also very far below, of all cultural particularisms. This is the Art of the Universal Merchant Republic. In private, local or regional commercial art, and street art, the other two types of artists coexist. 2° The "ancient" model is not at all obsolete, it is only on the margins of the official ideologies of the West. He persists in wanting to create the art of all times, an art shared by as many people as possible in different and differentiated societies.
